This week...

We are starting off another wonderful week in 1st Grade!! Here's what we will be learning this week...

Reading: Using text feathers to find information in a non-fiction book as well as understanding why an author would write a non-fiction book.

Today in Reading, we looked at a wide variety of non-fiction books and went on a "Scavenger Hunt" for non-fiction text features

Writing: We are still working on our Small Moments booklets. The students are doing a great job with these books. Once they are "published" we are putting them on our bookshelf for all our friends to read! :)

Math: We are learning how to use a 120 chart. We are learning that there are a lot of patterns and that it can help us add and subtract 10.

Science: We are learning about objects in the sky and how the sky changes for day and night.

Wind Spirals

Today we took Science outside! Today we were learning about the wind! We created these beautiful wind spirals. When we were inside the classroom they were not moving. Once we went outside, the spirals and giggles were awesome! We learned that air is all around, but there has to be a force of wind to make things move---or in this case, spiral! :)

"Dress Cool Stay in School"

Today, students came dressed based on their career ambitions! We had a wide variety of future careers. We had a vet, a dancer, cheerleaders, football players, baseball players, a pilot, an engineer, and teachers, just to name a few. Remember to DREAM BIG!!! :)

Air is everywhere!!

This week in Science we are learning all about air!!

In our Science notebooks, we recorded a list of things that have air inside them. The class came up with these ideas:
*balls
*tires
*bounce houses
*floaties
*balloons

Our learning goal was to identify the properties of air. We learned that air is invisible. We can not see it, but we can feel it! And, that air takes up space!

To help us explore these properties, we had a little fun with plastic bags! :)

Small Moments

In Writing, we are writing Personal Narratives. We have learned that a personal narrative means we are taking a small moment in our lives and telling a story.

Students are writing in mini books, being authors, illustrators, and writing GREAT stories about their own lives. They are the main character, and they know all the details! :)

We started off by thinking of BIG moments from our lives. We compared this to a big pumpkin!

Inside a pumpkin, there are tons of seeds, just like there are tons of small moments inside a BIG moment.

We brainstormed ideas together and then each student picked a topic they wanted to write about.

We started our books today and I was blown away with how wonderful they did! We will continue to work on these and add them to our classroom library for our friends to read!

Number Bonds

In Math, we have been learning how to count by tens and also being able to split a two-digit number into tens and ones.

We are using "Number Bonds" to help us! I have taught the kids to call these, "Bonds....Number Bonds!!!" (Just like James Bond! hehe)

Everyone is doing a great job with this activity!

We are meteorologists!!

This week we have been learning all about weather and the symbols that are used to represent the weather.

We are learning about how the weather can be:
    -Sunny
    -Cloudy
    -Partly Cloudy
    -Rainy
    -Stormy
    -Snowy

We have been recording what the weather is like and the temperature each day! Here's some action shots of us observing the weather outside! :)

Math Stations

Here we are working with lots of different hands-on manipulatives during Math Stations. After our Math lesson, your students will work on stations that will help them with areas they are still needing more practice! :)

Here, we are just enjoying all our different options! :)

Grandparents Day!!

We had so much fun at our grandparents lunch! I enjoyed meeting all the grandparents that came. I hope it was a special day for your child too! :)
