Contraction Surgery!!!

This week we have been learning ALL about contractions!! Today we pretended to be doctors and completed "Contraction Surgery!!"

We talked (briefly ;)) about what surgeons do. How they have to carefully cut, remove something, and then patch a person back up!

I gave each student a note card with two words on it. They carefully decided where to cut, what to get rid of, and used a bandaid as our apostrophe! :) Viola---we made a contraction!!

Sensory Poems

Today, we revisited Sensory poems! I had the class imagine they had a Popsicle in front of them and they used their 5 senses to create a sensory poem!

We then created "Popsicle" with paint swatches!

More measuring

Today's lesson taught us that when we measure large things we want to use a large tool!

Each student had 10 cubes stuck together. We learned how to use our finger to use our tool over and over again. We explored in our classroom by finding large things to measure. This also helped us practice counting by 10s!! :)

Last, we tried to measure the word wall!! It was too big for our class! In total, it took 278 cubes!!! :)

Measuring

This week we started a new unit in Math--Measuring! The kids have loved this and are doing an excellent job! In first grade, we use "non-standard" units to measure. So no rulers just yet! :)

Here we are using "Inch Tiles" to measure different things in our desks!!

We've learned 3 great tips---
1. Always measure in a straight line.
2. No gaps/spaces
3. Measure from end to end

Living/Non-Living in PicCollage

To wrap up our studies on living/non living, we grabbed some ipads and went on a little hunt for examples of each!

Students worked in groups to take pictures and then created fun projects in PicCollage! I was very proud of how well everyone worked together and their projects turned out great!! :)

First we took our pictures....

Then we headed back into the classroom to work on the PicCollage Ap!

Finished Products!!! :)

Living or Non-Living??

Last week in Science we learned about living and non living! We learned what living things needs and observed different examples of each.

On Wednesday, we had a very fun activity! I gave each student a LIVING worm and a NON- Living gummy worm!

Students observed and recorded their observations of both the living/non living worms!

The giggles and squeals were so much fun!!
